Hmmm . . . you might want to read a few non-Yankee histories of the war - the Emancipation Proclamation didn't actually free anybody. It was a pure propaganda stunt. And it wasn't the lack of free labor that kept the South in poverty after the war, it was the decade plus of military dictatorship which stole land and crops from the South. And more blacks died of starvation AFTER emancipation.
Most mainstream history books gloss over a lot of those facts.
