I'm thinking it's that last one. China was prone to being warring states. The "unification" of China isn't was people think it was either, only being a small corner of what China is today. Plus there were constant raids and invasions from outside groups (Mongols, Koreans, Japanese, Viet, Persians, etc). I think there's something screwy going on, likely with how the definition of "battles" in other languages.
