I was raised in a fairly racist area, not aware of it seeping into my thoughts and deeds.
When I first started to *really* understand, I was devastated. I felt like I was being blamed. Then I really thought about it, really seriously listened and read and stopped talking to hear what the people actually affected were saying.
I get the backlash - the feeling of guilt that comes out as hate. Fighting it is a choice every European American has to make.
I hope I succeed more than fail.
