A lot of people want it, and if there is no "official" solution, an unofficial one will be created, be it this or another one, and there is very little if anything any of us can do about it.
It would have been nice to have some kind of privacy-respecting federated search, but given the situation that would probably never get broad acceptance, so eventually someone like google will just suck it all up, use it for their index (and language model training) and we're all worse off.
None of this is good news.
