I think a lot of people misuse the terms "butch" and "femme." Butchfemme in the 1940s was viewed as a gender, special to lesbianism. Butch and femme is not limited to being an aesthetic, it is a role you take on in a relationship. That's the major difference between the words "femme" and "feminine." Butchfemme culture is a matter of lesbian gender expression, rather than "lately I've been dressing like a butch," it's who you are.
