Cao Cao is not “based” in the novel but Liu Bei is idiotic.
Yet different dynasties over the centuries in China would promote either Cao Cao or Liu Bei as being the good guy. There are good points to both. But it is a historical fiction novel. The broad events happened; the details are often the fiction.
They’re basically archetypes in it.
I still remember Guan Yu coming back as a vengeful ghost, and he was going to cause all sorts of trouble for the living, but when he came across a monk, the monk simply said (paraphrasing): “You are so upset that you have been killed, but if all men were as you are now, there would be millions of vengeful ghosts. Yet there are not. Not to mention how many YOU have killed, rightly and wrongly. What makes you special?”
Guan Yu realizes he is being silly, and goes into the afterlife. Wow, quickest exorcism ever.
