Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari signed a strategic partnership between their two countries, the most populous in Asia and Africa, and expressed their desire to play a greater role in the world. Nigeria is the first stop on Modi's tour, which includes Brazil to attend the G20 summit, and then Guyana. New Delhi described the visit as a meeting between "natural partners". Upon his arrival in Abuja, Modi said on social media, "I hope to deepen the bilateral relations between our two countries." Modi was received at the presidential palace with a ceremonial guard, before holding closed-door talks with the Nigerian president. Before the meeting, Modi said, "Our cooperation is very strong and there are many new opportunities to enhance it." He added, "We have always worked together to overcome challenges like terrorism, separatism, piracy, and drug trafficking." The Nigerian president, for his part, expressed his hope that this visit would strengthen "the strategic partnership between the two countries." The Indian community in Nigeria numbers around 60,000 people. The Nigerian president conferred the "Order of the Commander of the Federal Republic" on Modi, and pledged to work with him on "the basis of mutual respect and cooperation." After their meeting, the two leaders discussed the final touches on an economic cooperation agreement, a double taxation avoidance treaty, and a bilateral investment agreement, according to a joint statement. India and Nigeria are seeking a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, currently held by the United States, Russia, China, France, and Britain. In recent years, advocates of a "multi-polar world" have called for the inclusion of countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America in the council. Modi did not directly address this issue, but told the Nigerian president, "Together, we will continue to prioritize the priorities of the South." He added, "Thanks to our efforts, we will be able to achieve this."
