SomethingAwful was a little bit before my time too, but as I understand it they had an arc where they were funny, beloved, and relevant to the wider culture of the Internet in the early years of their existence, and then rapidly became the opposite of everything that made them successful in the first place and entered a downward spiral. It's like what you see with some YouTubers but for an entire website.
