I just don't think we should expect officers to put their own health at risk in this way when they already put their lives at risk to solve crime. I want my officers to have the time to eat well and healthily so that they can do their job properly. Likewise, I want them to be at their peak. I want them to be able to sleep well, to exercise well, to be able to use commonsense and think clearly... to be healthy and well. Making them skip food because something happens is not conducive to solving crime overall.
It's not about it being a paycheck but letting people have the right balance between work and living their lives. So they can have healthy relationships and unwind and do all the other things you need to do in order to live well. Of course you'd want to help other people in need if you can but it shouldn't come at your own expense. You can endanger their lives if you aren't well so it works both ways.
