It's worth remembering that the Bell/AT&T system survived as a de facto communications monopoly for so long by not antagonizing the US government. Had they undermined US foreign policy early on, they would've been nationalized without a moment's notice. And even then they were broken up as soon as it was feasible.
Something for people in the space industry to consider when cheering for an emerging communications monopoly run in an increasingly antagonistic way.
