i think the most remarkable thing about Starfield is how unambitious it really was. Todd talks it up like it's the next gen step for Bethesda but there's nothing here that wouldn't be at home with FO4. i know tech and graphics have stagnated but i was still expecting this to bet the "next-gen" Skyrim with guns in space.

it feels like they were just going full steam ahead laying tracks in front of the train as it came down the line and never planned the game out. they knew they wanted to do some big ambitious thing and they figured they would find it while developing the game - and then 5, 6, 7 however many years later this took to develop suddenly they realize they have to ship a game and never found it lol

i remember seeing some leaked gameplay months ago and the ground combat looked like shit but i mean Skyrim and FO4 have dogshit combat too so i wasn't surprised. i figured the 'it factor' was gonna be the space stuff but it's just a dressed up fast travel menu. the entire game seems to be built around fast travel, which is basically how normies played Oblivion and Skyrim anyway. they just built the game around the way people actually play their games lol.

i think the major problem with this game is that it's not a Fallout or an Oblivion in the sense that you have a big janky game that can be polished with bugfixes and mods. in order for modders to make Starfield compelling or even a good game is going to take so much effort you might as well just make your own game from scratch. the game is so unambitious, everything it does is like the bare minimum required to have it be passable. they're so held back by this engine and it's starting to show.

if you gave modders the time and money they could basically remake Starfield in FO4's engine. that's how flaccid Starfield is in its execution.
