The direct colonial empire was bound to fail in an hilariously explosive way and in my opinion we were relatively lucky in how it went, it could have been a lot worse.
The sphere of influence policy on the other hand, especially in Africa, was pretty successful as long as France was playing the “sometimes I’m part of GAYTO, sometimes I’m not aligned, you can’t tell hon hon hon !” game.
