To wit, even Consumer Reports has called for product safety regulations to incentivize Rust or other memory-safe development, in part because the kinds of bugs seen in C/C++ development *in practice* can really get people hurt. Yes, it's possible to not do that, and there's plenty of examples of large-scale C/C++ projects that are, for the most part, pretty safe.

That's not the predominance, though, and that matters from a product safety standpoint.
