the unis have become overly reliant on full fee students ( predominately international students). I think, in a lot of cases, senior staff salaries have become too generous too but the main problem is underfunding by governments. In TAFE there's been a huge dilution of quality brought on by the forced competition with the, mostly, dodgy non-TAFE trainers. Again, the root cause is underfunding by governments. Both sectors have been infected badly by the neo-conservative "user-pays" ideology.
