"A recent study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution has discovered that octopuses, previously thought to be solitary hunters, are forming hunting parties with various types of fish in the Red Sea. These octopuses use a technique called 'speculative hunting', where they probe crevices in reefs hoping to find edible prey. By teaming up with fish, such as grouper, the octopuses are able to significantly cut down on their hunting time. However, some fish, like the blacktip grouper, try to benefit from the octopuses' ability to flush out prey without contributing to the hunt. The octopuses are intelligent enough to detect these freeloaders and will physically assault them if they don't contribute to the hunt."
