Either you're on a server(or using a mod) that has different view distance settings for when you're on foot, in a ground vehicle, or in an aircraft, and the aircraft range is too far for your PC to handle at your current settings, or your PC just can't handle loading/displaying all that map info at plane speeds. Gotta find a balance between a viewdistance that lets you see important things at useful ranges, and a viewdistance that keeps your FPS high enough to be tolerable/playable. It's a really annoying game to try to get good frames in, even with really good hardware.
