As an ex-performing musician and renegade “sound-guy” myself, I’ve watched the evolution of the streaming age and have had a ringing in my ears ever since.
In my vision, garnering a smaller, and more interested community online (or in-person) that is willing to pay you directly (crypto, fiat, anything) is far more rewarding than paying Spotify to host a lesser quality version of your work.
8,000 plays on YouTube gets you about $40. A self hosted, pay-what-you want service that is direct from user to producer can make you that much in a far shorter time period.
I would rather $20 directly from 20 interested fans or users, than having to pay that amount to Spotify for others to view at no cost or consequence to you while Spotify collects their fees as well.
Keep going! There is a way!
