IMHO - Mastodon’s searchable posts option should be enabled by default for new users.
It works really well, and only applies to posts marked Public - so the safety concerns are limited so people can still post regardless without being discoverable.
I think it helps level the playing field so each account is equally visible on a subject, and new joiners won’t realise that.
