For me there's only one rule: finish the first draft (I am very, very close).
Whether you get there through a detailed process or if you just sit down and write from the spark of an idea, I don't think it matters.
The real work seems to be in the second draft. I'm a plotter, and I already know there's going to be major work before the story comes fully together.
And then an editor gets to have a go at it!
