This is why the on-chain part is optional. It's mainly for posts you are committed to being forever as part of a human archive. Journalism or whistle-blowing come to mind. Also there are many levels of blockchain. More expensive blockchains like Bitcoin are for more permanent data. Etch.social posts to Base and Arweave by default. Base does not even try to have long term guarantees. Arweave does, but claim it will be around for a hundred years, but we don't know that yet. We're making trade offs for economic purposes.
I appreciate your input. Ultimately I'm trying to give people the option where it didn't exist before as well as attempting to link multiple decentralized networks. We've added BlueSky now. Event if we add all the decentralized networks together they don't even come close to the size of the smallest centralized network. That's one reason I think it's important to start building bridges. I don't just care about decentralization existing. I also want decentralization to win in a practical sense. This means getting users and one things users care about is exposure for their content (I think).
