BMI is a bad metric because it assumes certain averages about body type. Could ∆BMI be a a useful metric?

I've been biking A LOT lately. I expect realistically to get down to 175 or 165, a 34 inch waist and to be able to do one handed push-ups less poorly.

But is there some kind of "good" unified number to quantify, "well my weight didn't drop this week, but I'm objectively slimmer so I've gained muscle?"

Why can we track so many fitness metrics but not find a "better" BMI?!?
