I remembered just now, I have a half-assembled MT32-Pi with a Pi 3 in it. I can borrow that for bare metal testing at first. It won't perform as well as a 400, but that may be a good thing -- if performance is or can be made acceptable on a 3, then it will *definitely* be good on a 4, 400, or 5.
