The Nuckelavee is one of the most feared creatures in Scottish folklore, specifically in the Orkney Islands. It is a grotesque, skinless being, its exposed muscles blackened and pulsing with yellow veins. Though often described as centaur-like, it is not a fusion of man and horse, but a single monstrous entity—its upper body growing directly from the back of its equine form. Its breath is said to wither crops and sicken livestock, and its very presence spreads disease.
Unlike many supernatural beings of Celtic mythology, the Nuckelavee has no redeeming qualities. It is pure malevolence, kept at bay only by the sea. It cannot cross fresh water, and the only known defense against it is to flee across a stream.
