An alternate opinion could be that people are just not disciplined or sensible enough to reason for themselves and, thus, they must be guided to make ‘correct’ choices.

I feel that way of thinking insults humanity.

There has to be a purpose for those in power repressing education throughout the ages— perhaps out of fear of losing that power when people become more informed. And when they are not informed, they can do not have tools to help them reason and can be controlled.
