Conceptually this is related to the well-known .d/ drop-in directories, where typically all contained files are lexicographically sorted and their contents (usually) concatenated and read as one (usually) configuration file. The major difference is that for .v/ it's *one* contained file that is picked, determined by version and for .d/ it's all contained files that are used.
