- Steven as a role model for finding ways through conflict, but also the acknowledgement that some people just can't be Stevened
- the nuance and ambivalence in characters' feelings about Rose Quartz
- plot events having real emotional consequences and character(s) grappling with trauma, on screen, with no quick fix
