Remember rare earths are not called rare because of scarcity. They're called rare because they rarely react with other elements. As important as they may be, the name drives people to think they're valuable like gold because there's so few of it in the world. The truth is it was just more convenient to mine it from existing discoveries while over time more uses were found. Now those sources are politically vulnerable so strategic homeland owned sources need to be prospected.
