Hot Take:
Disabled people do struggle. We have difficulty doing things that others find easy.
BUT, We are able to overcome a lot if we have community support and accessibility in our needs and rec.
The MAIN ISSUE is the abled being discriminatory towards us. They treat us by and large as though our limitations are a moral failing and that we deserve our struggles, poverty, pain, and ostracization. And many seem to believe it. And their mistreatment of us results in growing up feeling lesser and internalizing the ablist narrative that we deserve to suffer. That if only we could run 5 miles, or hold a normal conversation, or speak out loud, or see 20:20, or eat the same food, or keep a 9-5 job, or just stop waking up from night terrors, or read body language....
That if we could be abled, we could qualify for happiness too. That we could deserve dignity.
But the TRUTH is, we deserve happiness, dignity, prosperity, love, and respect, AS WE ARE.
WE ARE GOOD ENOUGH
WE ARE NOT LESSER
WE ARE NOT FAILURES
EVERY DAY WE DRAW BREATH IS A VICTORY OVER OUR ADVERSITY
And, if we didn't have to say this, if we didn't have to unlearn the message that we are deserving of our oppression, if the abled saw us as complete human beings worthy of kindness and respect...
We could show you our full potential.
