What I've found in dealing with severe anxiety and depression is that being kind to myself is the most effective strategy.

That means recognising that painful emotions exist, and that I have the right to feel them. I get to decide what upsets me, even if it might seem irrational to someone else.

But all my life, I've been taught to avoid self pity, and I do find self pity an unattractive quality in others.

Is there such a thing as self pity, in this negative sense? Or is it in the eye of the beholder? "what I feel is justified self kindness, and what you feel is unearned, weak self pity?"
