If PanAm, Blockbuster, or Polaroid had been nationalized, I expect those once-monopolies would have been kept alive at public expense as zombie companies -- after all, they employ voters.
Much better *breaks up* monopolies, rather than nationalizing them. Hence AT&T still exists, but it doesn't make phones and is a shadow of its former self.
