Here's a nice thread on it. The gist being that assets held through a bank, broker, are held by intermediaries who use it for their various shenanigans. You don't have a direct claim to those assets, only a share in the total assets minus liabilities. But the intermediary's creditors have first dibs to everything, so if they were to go under (which doesn't even require the big banks going under) you'd end up with nothing.
