I mean - it can be great, if you truly want to run the research teams and always pursue the latest grants. But there's the opportunity cost about what other kind of career you could build for the time/money.
I had wanted to be a professor when I was in school. But I ended up joining a startup where I got the opportunity to educate in a different way. It was different from what I expected, but I've been at this firm for 18 years now.
