If you want a smartphone the obvious alternative is Android.
Dumb phones are worth considering also.
I don't have cellular service and just get text/SMS to my laptop. I use an XMPP provider but you could go free (plus surveillance) via Google Voice.
I believe it's possible to connect a (ham) radio to the telephone or SMS networks.
