A part of me is conflicted on the fact that Sunny shows emotion in the manga. I can't tell if I like it anyway but know that it kind of doesn't work considering the game... or just like it. Nor do I really know how I feel about Sunny having 'internal dialogue' with himself now. Not between Omori and Sunny but like, actual internal dialogue.
I feel like in terms of realism, it makes very little sense for Sunny to be emotionless. Of course he DOES have emotions, that's not what I'm saying; but what I'm saying is that Sunny basically does not exhibit any emotions whatsoever. He is expressionless throughout the entire game. If I recall, this is to such an extent that Basil and other characters on occasion get freaked out by Sunny's total lack of expression despite the situation.
From a realism standpoint; it makes no sense. It just doesn't. From a story standpoint, I think it's masterful- because both Omori and Sunny start out as unflinching, 'emotionless' people. Omori is ultimately still emotionless, and his emotions are linked solely to combat, and he does not experience actual joy, anger, or sadness. So, you know- by having an ending where Sunny does something completely mundane, like smiling or showing any amount of emotion- it's... very heartbreaking, in a good way. Maybe heartbreaking isn't the good term. Heartmending? My heart was broken after I played Omori and the ending fixed that. That's what I meant.
The game makes up for the lack of *real* expression or, actual energy in sunny through fun fight sequences and banter between the characters... this is possible in an environment that's literally just glorified pixel art. For a comic that has to rely heavily on art and detailed expressions and movement... this is simply not possible.
As somebody who is so used to seeing Sunny just not emote at all, but also know that he IS capable of doing it... I'm just, conflicted. I think it really would bring the issue down if every panel of his was just him staring blankly and not saying anything (I DO hope he doesn't say anything outside of the few quiet 'ok' and nods) but at the same time it feels as if though this is... perverse in a way. I don't mean that explicitly in a bad way, but it does feel perverse.
