Italy has a lot of overall design experience, and in many fields, is considered the best in the world.
Which is all the more surprising that Italy is so horribly behind in digital user interfaces (smart phones, control panels, digital displays, etc).
This is especially true in the coffee and espresso industry. A lot of the UI you see (buttons, LCD displays etc) are done by Gicar on contract. And they are stuck in the 1990s. Even Gicar's website seems stuck in the early 2000s.
https://gicarsrl.com/en/prodotti/displays/This is why, for example, the La Marzocco GS3, a machine costing as much as $10,000, has such a horrible, dated UI. It's made by Gicar, and was 10 years out of date when the GS3 was introduced. Now it's 25 years out of date.
Same goes for Rancilio, Faema, and others.
