"El Fatal"

There are no terrestrial predators on the islands, but the land itself can be treacherous.

In order to reach the location of the baby tortoises, we had to hike for hours into a desert nicknamed El Fatal. The entire way was an overgrown, uneven trail of loose, hot lava rock.

Presumably, this poor beast misstepped and snapped an ankle..

Thinking back to the time I spent a few weeks in the Galapagos Islands studying the giant tortoise.

What an experience, I felt I might as well have been in Jurassic Park, but with no predators.

It amazed me how long their necks really are, only really seen when they're threatening each other over territory, food, or mate.

They also lay their heads on the ground while sleeping, which I found amusing.
