"content": "This is in the class of VEEGA (Venus Earth Earth Gravity Assist) trajectories invented for Galileo after Shuttle Centaur was killed and they had to launch it with the much less performant IUS.\n\nBasically, you first figure out what ideal trajectory you want from Earth, and then back track out the Earth and/or Venus flybys required to build up that velocity.\n\nFor Lucy, they had the extra feature that the first Earth gravity assist was just within the launch vehicle performance capabilities. So if they had missed the first launch opportunity, they would've waited and essentially launched in their first Earth flyby window, with less launch margin, arriving at the same time. Not sure if JUICE is similar.",
