I agree with your last paragraph. But it's worth noting that you can still be censored by the people you rent your domain from. The main advantage that I can see is the greater number of entities you can get an identity from.
Even better would be a decentralised name system. I.e. blockchains like Namecoin, sophisticated petname systems like GNS, or simpler petname systems such as described here: https://spritelyproject.org/news/petname-systems.html
