These were the words of Jesus as he hung dying on a Roman cross. The answer, of course, is that Jesus was taking our sin upon himself, and sin separates from a holy God. He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might become righteous before God. I cannot say I fully understand what happened at that moment, but I am eternally thankful for what Jesus did.
