Early commitment to decentralization...yes. Pre-medieval.
But they became deviant.
The Church monopolized and subsequently abused that role, which led to the Enlightenment, a sort of rebellion against that monopoly, and a decentralizing era unlike anything the Church ever came close to achieving. They never came back from that loss. They still seemingly abuse children, centuries later 🤷♂️
Besides, the real tragedy is how many alternative narratives the Church brutally snuffed out back then. We'll never know.
