I personally found having a smartphone in school useful for recording wrongdoings by school staff and communicating with my parents when my chronic disease acted up.
It also wouldn't work because alot of students would just end up using old phones as diversions which was the first thing everyone did when my middle school banned phones and made everyone hand them in.
