(As I mentioned, I’m on my way through it for the second time.) I have a feeling it’s exactly what you call the “florid archness.” Something about the mixing of high and low. I’ll make you cringe if I say it feels Shakespearean. Crudeness mixed with faux-formal diction? Esp. Swearingen (the aptly named) but everyone in their turn. Calamity Jane!",
