In my view, what you are suggesting is exactly what the government expects from us, i.e., either to comply with everything they say or go into hiding because either way, we would be acknowledging its significance. I believe it is a better choice not to be scared, which, in the end, saves more time to read classics, something I personally enjoy as well.
Anyway, it's just another point of view; I am on the same side as you are
