Then you have some experience to close off a huge number of possible (but now known to be unviable) paths based on how your ideas interacted with reality.
My advice: make your own engine. I don't know you well, but from what I've seen, you seem like you're happiest starting from as close to the ground as possible when building something. Pre-fab engines are a lot of handholding.
Worst case, you end up with an unfinished engine and everything you need to know to choose something from the off the shelf options.
