On this day in 1989, just hours after the horrific Tiananmen Square massacre—known in Brazil as the Square of Heavenly Peace—when soldiers, under orders from the Chinese Communist Party, slaughtered hundreds of young people demanding more freedom and democracy in Beijing (some sources estimate 2,700 dead), an extraordinary scene took place: a man stood in front of a column of Chinese tanks, stopping them.
No one knows his name or what happened to him afterward; he entered history simply as the “Tank Man.”
