Leadership by the two presidents created a largely collaborative relationship between faculty and the administration built on mutual trust. I saw that trust grow substantially during my career and that culture made it easy for me to be straightforward in my interactions with faculty members, many of whom became my friends. When I arrived at the university, there was already a policy and process in place for faculty members to annually evaluate their department chairpersons. It was done on paper at the time and my team converted that evaluation to an online system in the early days of the internet using Perl and HTML. Several years later, the faculty senate proposed giving faculty members an opportunity to evaluate the college deans, provost, and president using a similar online form. That proposal was approved in short order and faculty members were even given the opportunity to view results. In fact, the faculty senate published a summary of the results on their website each year. (3/5)
