Forced return to Syria: Cypriot Coast Guard pushes people back into the open sea

On the 13 March 2025, approximately 80 people on board two boats were fleeing sectarian violence in Syria. They were trying to reach a place of safety in Europe. Instead, they were subjected to life threatening treatment at sea and were pushed back by the Cypriot Coast Guard (CCG). The CCG forced them to return to Syria. The people were stopped in the open water where they were towed back towards Lebanon and Syria and forced to return to the place they tried to escape from.
