Spengler's is the formulation of cyclical history most influential on the radical right. But long before him there was Polybius, who sees us moving not from spring all the way to winter, but from kingship all the way to mob rule. If we look at our civilization through Polybius rather than Spengler—and if we make a few crucial modifications to Polybius—then it becomes clear that we are much further into the winter period than we normally think.
