Watching the original Poltergeist movie for the first time since I was a little kid, and it's kind of all over the place. It does a fine job of building up tension, and a lot of the effects hold up, but it's missing a certain narrative, thematic, and character coherence to really make it resonate. It probably doesn't help that I'm watching it right after "The Sixth Sense."
The steak and guy-washing-his-face scene still creeps me out, though.
