2000s was probably the peak for western otaku culture because it was big enough to have an actual decently-sized community behind it but not so big that people who aren't already predisposed to liking it would find it and try to join and change it to their liking. it's weird when i see people clamoring for those times who still support everything that ruined that in the first place
